How do ‘religion,’ ‘science’ and ‘society’ relate to one another? How do these ideas condition our understandings of the world, and our lives? Is there necessary conflict or compatibility? Can religion be a function in the development of the sciences, or can science change the way we view the ethical and spiritual life?
In this course we will explore the social, scientific and religious construction of worldview and knowledge. Critical analysis of the institutions and perspectives of knowledge will help students recognize and develop ethically informed decisions regarding one’s civic role in society at the intersection of world-conscious viewpoints. Emphasis will be placed on the student’s abilities to expand and recognize their own choices, values, and actions in relationship to those of others, resulting in meaningful appreciation.
We will address the overlap between science, religion, and society by asking questions that challenge conventional religious and scientific worldviews, specifically scientific materialism and mystic or religious views. What roles do science and religion have in moving forward as a society or species? By exploring and unpacking these rich and complex relationships, this course will seek to understand ways in which science, religion, and culture shape our perspectives and worldview.
